The St. Andrews Trade Token Series enjoys a special place in Canadian numismatic history: it is currently now the longest run of consecutive annual publication of trade tokens anywhere in the country. With its wide variety of designs, metals, mintages, and the occasional happy accident, this series is highly collectible, and a genuine complete collection may be said to be truly rare.
The first St. Andrews Trade Token was issued in 1976 by the Chamber of Commerce in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea in New Brunswick, Canada. With an ambitious inaugural mintage of 10,000 cupro-nickel coins and another 500 in .925 silver, all struck at the Royal Canadian Mint, the series creators showed that they were taking the increasingly popular trade dollar method of municipality promotion quite seriously. Who among them could have guessed that, in 2024, the series would issue its 49th annual coin, and boast 72 (maybe more!) unique mintages in its repertoire?
On this History page you can see recent St. Andrews Trade Coins promotional posters, Collector Cards for most coins, some images of special coin presentation, and a variety of printed documents.
In 2015 St. Andrews Chamber of Commerce issued the first in a series of annual promotional posters. Here are some examples, including this year's edition.
