The 2005 Right Whales US Strike

Being the first bimetal coin in any Canadian trade token series is not the only distinction of the 2005 edition. If you have a 2005 Right Whales bimetal coin, try this: Hold the coin with your index finger at the top and thumb at the bottom. Then turn the coin over horizontally. If the crest is upside-down, you have one of only 250 US strike coins in this series. The text on the card accompanying the coin reads:

Minted at the request of the St. Andrews Chamber of Commerce, the 30th limited edition 2005 St. Andrews Trade Dollar depicts the Right Whale. 3000 Canadian style and only 250 US style coins have been minted. 'US style' refers to the orientation of the images when the coin is turned over (US style the flip-side is upside-down, while Canadian style the flip-side is right-side-up). With only 250 US style coins struck, it makes the coin a rarity indeed. Enjoy!

If you think that the 250 units are a rarity, consider this: of the 3000 Canadian style strikes, 2,775 were the bimetal edition, with the others (known as 'medal strikes' for their flat face with no circle around the whales image) produced in gold-plated, nickel-silver (argentan), and commercial bronze in lots of 75 each[2]. So, whether you own a US Strike, one of the other 2005 Special Editions, or all of them, you're much closer to a truly complete set of St. Andrews Trade Tokens than most collectors. Here's hoping you're one of the lucky ones!
